Symptoms of depression can vary widely, but they often include feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, and difficulty concentrating. It's important to recognize that depression is a treatable condition, and seeking help is the first step towards recovery.

ADHD FAQs

Common questions about ADHD diagnosis and treatment

ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is an older term that was used to describe what is now called ADHD, Predominantly Inattentive Presentation. ADHD is the current diagnostic term that includes three presentations: Predominantly Inattentive, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive, and Combined. All are considered subtypes of ADHD under current diagnostic criteria.

Absolutely. While ADHD is often identified in childhood, many adults are diagnosed later in life. Symptoms may present differently in adults, often as difficulties with time management, organization, maintaining focus at work, or regulating emotions. Adult ADHD is a valid diagnosis and can be effectively treated.

Medication is often very effective for ADHD but isn't always necessary. The decision depends on symptom severity, impairment level, and personal preference. Many people benefit from a combination of medication and behavioral strategies. For mild cases or certain individuals, behavioral interventions alone may be sufficient. We work with each patient to develop the most appropriate treatment plan.

ADHD diagnosis involves a comprehensive evaluation including clinical interviews, symptom checklists, often input from family members or teachers (for children), and sometimes psychological testing. We rule out other possible causes for symptoms and assess whether diagnostic criteria are met. There's no single test for ADHD - diagnosis is based on a pattern of symptoms that have been present since childhood and cause impairment in multiple areas of life.

Many behavioral strategies can help manage ADHD symptoms: establishing routines, using planners/organizational tools, breaking tasks into smaller steps, minimizing distractions, regular exercise, adequate sleep, mindfulness practices, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Environmental modifications at school or work (like extended time for tasks) can also be beneficial. We help patients develop a personalized toolkit of strategies.
